It seems that a nation fixed on improving health standards and living longer lives wouldn't let the leaders of tomorrow fall victim to the advertising exploits of the Tobacco Industry. The money spent by tobacco companies doesn't stop with public advertisements. Since 1997, the Tobacco Industry has given more than 20 million dollars in political donations. Could this be the reason Americans are still faced with the dangers of tobacco? The dubious amount of money the tobacco industry spends on advertisement and political bribes easily compares to the sum of money society has shelled out due solely to tobacco.
             Have you ever had the urge to gulp nail polish remover, maybe ammonia? Ever want to choke down mothballs, suck car exhaust? One cigarette contains the chemicals found in each of those, along with 3,996 other chemicals, but only one hundred of them are identified poisons. It's no wonder that habitually smoking puts people in hospitals. That's their problem though, right? Wrong, 60% of health costs in the United States go directly to treat tobacco related illnesses. If we were able to take back over half of our health costs than who knows what we could do to treat or cure people with diabetes, AIDS, the list could on and on. Society carries the burden of residential fires as well, typically providing care for burn victims and rebuilding property. It's been found that smokers cause 35% of residential fires. .
             The issues of crime and tobacco do not often cross paths, but one startling statistic shows a connection between the two. Smokers committed 90% of all crimes in America. Not to say that all smokers are criminals. Theoretically, if smokers committed 90% percent of crimes, then with tobacco we could back 90% of the costs our country spends on judicial courts, prisons, guards, and policemen. .
             Not only does tobacco put an economical burden on society, but also smokers are found to be less productive in the work place.
