Music and Math

"" (Motluk:17) It has been noticed in a particular investigation that "the percentage of undergraduate students having taken a music course was about eleven percent which was about average amongst mathematics majors."" (Henle:18) This is an incredible phenomenon which proves further that Mathematics and Music are very closely related subjects.
Besides the obvious connections between mathematics and music, there are those connections which can only be seen my understanding music itself. I am lucky enough to have taken a few Music classes in high school which gives me the ability to explain music in a mathematical sense. I have learned threw my years that math can be found in music in many different forms. Some including, note lengths, the "Mozart effect-, scale intervals, the "Harmonic Mean-, pitch differences, and sounds. There are different types of math involved in each topic. This ranges from simple addition and subtraction problems to advanced trigonometry applications. Most of the math involved with music can be found in the form of equations. When the correct elements are filled into the formula, it can be solved. There are many different equations for solving various music ideas. Some deal with individual note values and others deal with the wavelengths that are produced by music being played. .
The word "note" is a little overused even in music, so in this essay I am going to restrict its meaning to "an object having the properties of frequency and length."" (Motluk:17) On the other hand, Frequency "is the measure of the highness or lowness of a note, and length is its duration measured in variable-sized units called "whole notes".(17) One of the most important parts of music is learning the types and values of notes. In Music, there is a simple way to determine the lengths of certain notes using a simple math problem. This is the basic concept in which music can be explained using math.
