Solution #1: If I choose to vote to get rid of this conscience rule, I believe that the shortage of the employees would stop, patients would not necessarily need to be rescheduled, every patient would be treated with the same respect, and the health care professionals would not be placing their own beliefs ahead of the patient, possibly making a better reputation for the hospital
Getting rid of this conscience rule could also cause some employees to leave, and/or become uncooperative based upon the idea that the hospital is forcing these staffers into doing something that they don't want to do or believe in, possibly causing some bad care being done to the patients, and not showing their work to the best of their ability.
Solution #2: If I vote to keep the conscience rule, some professionals would argue that favoritism is being shown, and the workplace could become hostile. With employees opting out, there would be decreased staff, causing managers to call staff in from home on their days off, pt's to undergo stress by rescheduling, even causing a bad reputation for the hospital. Also, allowing this rule to stay in effect could open door for future rules to come in place based on beliefs of homosexuality, leading employees to opt out of treating AIDS patients due to the patient's choice of lifestyle.
Values (Upheld & Sacrificed for each solution):.
Solution #1: Upheld: I would be upholding the employees right to refuse orders. Employees have the right to refuse services which violate deeply held personal moral values. I believe that this right would be reiterated by keeping the conscience rule. I would also be upholding the employees" rights to free expression by letting the employee express their own opinion about a topic without being disciplined for doing so. The principle of fidelity also comes into effect here with my employees. Treating the employees with respect for their decision needs to acknowledged in this situation.
