Also, to add to the structure of the plot, Orwell describes Winston's dreams he has of the Party in detail to help describe certain points of the plot. The novel covers a period of about 5 years in which I detected some of the foreshadowing present in the novel such as when Winston first met O"Brien, I thought he was a member of the Party by the way he acted kindly in a fake way. .
Point of View:.
This novel is written from the third person objective point of view. George Orwell's purpose in writing with this style is so we can get a real feel for the characters without having to be them. The objective point of view is like being a fly on the wall and the narrative voice records only what is visible. This point of view was used effectively throughout the entire novel to bring across observations of the characters actions and feelings. There are a handful of shifts throughout the novel in which the point of view switches from third person objective to first person participant when Winston is telling about his personal feelings about Julia and the Party.
Characters:.
Of course the main character in 1984 is thirty nine year old Winston Smith. He could be described as thin, frail, thoughtful, and intellectual. This novel is about Winston's experiences with the Party that he dislikes so much and that doesn't allow any freedom. Winston is used to show how the totalitarian government control is harsh and oppressive toward the people. A quote from the book in which Winston talks about the Party is as follows, "this Party's rules are absurd, I"m writing in my diary even if it is illegal". This quote reveals Winston's thoughts of the Party and how their rules are strict because they don't want anyone thinking bad thoughts of the Party.
A second main character in this novel is Julia. Julia is a dark-haired girl working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. Julia enjoys being with Winston, and claims to have had affairs with many Party members.
