             During 1898 The United States went to war with Spain in order to free Cuba. Incidentally the war with Spain regarding Cuba left the United States with ownership of Puerto Rico. Many still question are intentions with going to war with Spain and taking ownership of Puerto Rico. Some believe that we took the island in order to protect the Panama Canal others believe it was due to are strong trading with Puerto Rico that involved sugar cane and coffee. Though the fact still remains that Puerto Rico never asked to be a part of the United States. But what separates Puerto Rico's history from other Latin America and Caribbean countries is that it was one of Spain's last two colonies in the New World, in addition it has the longest Hispanic influence in the region. .
             Establishing a Identify in the United States .
             Since the early nineteenth century, Puerto Ricans have established numerous social and political associations in the United States. One of the first labor organizations of Puerto Ricans in new York City was the Alianza Obrera Puertorriquena . Founded in 1923, the alianza was associated with the socialist Party headed by Santiago Iglesias Pantin. The organization proposed "to establish a better intelligence and cooperation among all of us Puerto Ricans living in New York City, principally among the men and women who militate in the ranks of labor." The final goal of this organization was to "work for the well being of the Puerto Rican laboring colony in the United States of the Working class in Puerto Rico". The Puerto Rican government opposed and did not support such radical causes. .
             The Puerto Rican League which was established in New Jersey in 1923 and established itself with the democratic party. The goal of this group was to "unite in links of fraternity and mutual protection all Puerto Ricans residing in the United States and those who visit this country". The group wanted to establish a program that help Puerto Rican members of society to increase their English speaking skills and who wanted to strengthen their political presence in American Democracy.
