These monuments truly reveals a society capable of coordinating their efforts that possess the acquire skills that were passed down from one generation to another. Stone (rock) cutters that persistently chipped away year after year in the quarries to mold the stones must have required a tremendous amount of dedication. These monuments reveal to us a society that was determined to complete their work and leave their mark upon the world. Much of the information on building these pyramids comes from archaeology (the careful study of material remains) that draws the support from texts and representations. Sometimes only archaeology can tell us how the structure or monument originally appeared (Seven Wonders, pg.14).
The success in the transportation and erection of the huge stones that weighed hundreds of tons is remarkable. This culture demonstrated that they were architectural geniuses and had artistic skills by their creations of richly carved temples and palaces with their ability to manipulate massive quantities of materials, sometimes dragged from distance. By studying details of the structures themselves, by careful excavation of their sites, by precise survey of their dimensions and orientation, and by a more general understanding of ancient technologies, we can begin to understand how these monuments may have been created. The size and construction of these monuments reflects the message of securing their remembrance of their rulers' existance and the society that had created them (Seven Wonders, pg. 16).
The Pyramids of Giza were designed to protect the king's body. The Egyptians believed that human beings had two bodies, a physical body that was preserved (mummification) and a spiritual one, which they called ka. The pyramids were furnished with various objects of regular life so the ka could return and continue its life despite the death of the physical body. The shape/design may be a solar symbol that represents in solid form the oblique rays of sunlight, which are sometimes seen breaking through the clouds.
