Colonial Revolutions

The colonies were created by companies and individuals, not set up by the crown or parliament. As colonies, they basically had the right to govern themselves, and colonists were still considered English citizens. Yet before, during, and the English civil war, the colonies were left alone, this time is called the Period of Salutary Neglect. In it the colonies were neglected by England. During this time the colonies had a chance to develop virtually without the presence of the crown or parliament. Having this freedom and independence, the colonies soon became accustomed to living this way. When this freedom and independence that they always had is revoked, the colonists fight for things to return to the way they were. .
When England started exercising authority of the colonies after the Glorious Revolution they began to change the way the colonies had always done things. They start to take away things that the colonists had always had. This is why the colonists become upset, this is why they are fighting. England began by revoking eight colonies charters and converting them into royal colonies, each under the authority of an appointed official. This was difficult because much of the colonies independence was taken with the charters, independence the colonies once had to govern themselves. The governors of the colonies had a good bit of power. They had the right to tell the legislative bodies when and where to meet, as well as dismiss the assembly of the legislation, and call for new elections for the legislative positions. Governors could produce judicial courts with judges of their choice.
The authority of England would first be used to pass a new law. Most of the laws being passed were taxes, or had a goal of somehow providing England with more money. Making more money or amassing more money was the fundamental goals of mercantilism, the system newly adopted by England.
