In preparing to write this paper I could not help but to think about my experiences in the sport of basketball. Basketball has been my favorite activity since I was young. I can remember one summer in the early eighties when us kids would build our own basketball court from old plastic milk crates. We would break the bottoms out with a hammer and then nail the crates to trees so we could play basketball. I would also go to the playgrounds and watch the older guys play the game at a much faster pace then what I was use to with my friends. The first thing I learned about basketball is that there are twelve players on each team. Not all twelve players of each team play at the same time. There can only be five players from each team that are allowed to be on the floor. From that knowledge I would gather eleven other guys and we would go to the neighborhood playground and we would challenge other guys to a game of street basketball. Street basketball is a game played with out rules. .
However as I became older I began to understand the game of basketball and the rules of the game. I was introduced to organized basketball in the fifth grade. I joined my school team that only consisted of seventh and eighth graders. Height was a major factor for my coach in asking me to join the team. Height is a major factor for most coaches in deciding who will be on a team and who will not be on a team. Skill of the game is secondly important also because coaches want guys who understand the fundamentals of basketball. Learning the rules of basketball is not complicated with the help of a good coach and memorizing. .
Basketball is a physical sport that you have to be in shape in order for you to play. Basketball consists of two teams that play against each other with five players from each team running up and down the court.
