Foreign languages

 

            There are quite a few reasons why we, the Laurel High School, need another language taught and offered in this school system. And the school board needs to recognize this need and want by students and teachers alike. I have surveyed the students and heard our teachers" response to the survey after I told them what my survey was about. I have also done extensive research on why it is important to our future.
             It's been proven that students that study a foreign language score higher on the SAT's. And students develop better listening and retention skills. The study of a foreign language helps improve English vocabulary and its proficiency. It also gives students a better understanding of the English language.
             Learning a foreign language will help to get into an out of state college. It will also help with one's job opportunities and helping to higher salary potential. The companies that get their products from overseas need people that can travel to the country, understand the language, customs and know how to get the best deal for the company.
             Out of the languages: French, German, Japanese, and Latin what one is more useful towards global trade and makes it easier to trade? With French; the fact that it is the second most taught language after English. So, most people would likely to understand you. It is spoken by six different continents. And is the official language of the Olympics.
             German is more closely related to English than any other language. So, it would be easier to learn. A lot of our trading comes from Eastern European economies. Most Eastern Europeans speak German.
             Japanese is one of the hardest languages to master. And since there are fewer students in the classroom it would make it a better learning environment for the students. Since fewer people learn and master it, it makes for a very marketable skill in most jobs. Most companies are looking to trade with Japan and they are looking for someone to help them out with trade overseas.
