Self Esteem

Self esteem, in its most basic form is defined as how much a person likes, accepts, and respects himself on the whole. Self esteem is one characteristic of human life that separates the human race from other species inhabiting the planet. However, humans in themselves are very different from each other. Some have very different ethnic backgrounds, different traits, and different ways of life but every human no matter who or where has one thing in common: Personality. Personality though differs not just with the ways mentioned above but with every single person on earth; no two personalities are identical but within personality is the concept of self esteem and this everyone does possess. Self esteem, either high or low is present in the psyche of every man, woman, and child. This essay is going to look at first the different types of personalities present in society. This will tie in with the next two topics discussed, being how self esteem is lowered and how to enhance self esteem. These two topics tie in with the different types of personalities because the type of personality a person has directly influences his/her view of self. Finally this paper will examine one common self esteem related study. There is not much in the way of research available on a topic such as self esteem, this is so for two reasons. One is that self esteem on its own is a relatively new concept to the area of science. Self esteem has only recently been something of discussion because of newly diagnosed diseases such as depression, as for a long time there was no actual classification for this disorder. The second reason self esteem is not a widely researched field is that self esteem is purely conceptual. There are no numbers or measures to perfectly assess self esteem. That being said we as humans do know certain things in this broad area and we will begin this paper with a look at personality.
