Plain-folks appeal, a device where a speaker tries to win our confidence and support by appearing to be a person like ourselves, is another type of propaganda. Bush's speech displays plain-folks appeal when he says, "My fellow citizens, for the last nine days, the entire world has seen for itself the state of our union." He uses this type of propaganda to show that he can relate to what we"re going through and to remind the people of the nation that he is one of us. He wants to let us know that we"re not alone, and that since we"re all on the same boat, we need to work together to fight back. When he uses the words "my fellow citizens," it helps the audience to recognize and to feel comfortable having him as a leader knowing that he's feeling the same states of emotions as the rest of America. Bush wants us to trust that whatever he has planned will be to our best interest.
Argumentum ad populum, which is also known as stroking, is an "argument to the people" or "telling the people what they want to hear." Evidence that this type of propaganda was used in Bush's speech was when he said, "Whether we bring our enemies to justice, or bring justice to our enemies, justice will be done." This quote shows that Bush's purpose for using this device is to reassure the nation and to indicate that he has things under control. Using words like "justice will be done," reveals that Bush wants to gain the popularity of his audience by showing how strong and determined he is in backing up our nation.
In my opinion, Bush did a good job in addressing our nation, and I feel that he chose the right words to use in the different techniques of propaganda that was portrayed in his speech. When he used the name-calling device, it did in fact make me think of the terrorists badly, and it made me feel as if they deserve no respect whatsoever. The plain-folks appeal effected me as well because it showed me that we"re on the same level, and he doesn't think of himself any greater which means he can relate to us and do what we feel would be best.
