Now imagine that one of you has passed on unexpectedly not leaving a will or any formal documents leaving all of acquired items to the other person. Now imagine being told that just because you were a domestic partner and not legally married, that you are entitled to nothing the other person has left behind. No retirement, no health benefits, no social security, no property, no assets nothing. Doesn't seem right does it? It doesn't, but with domestic partnerships not being legal, the chosen partner has no rights to anything.
