The death of Josie's close friend John Barton is symbolic of the turning point in her perspective of another character Ivy Lloyd. At the beginning of the text Ivy is referred to as "Poison Ivy," the negative connotations of the phrase indicating Josie's jealousy and envy of the character. In chapter four while referring to the debating season, Josie says "the only time when Poison Ivy and I are on the same side of life, agreeing on the same thing." With this quote the composer makes the characters" rivalry obvious to the responder. The characters" names are deliberately separated, using the pronoun "I" instead of "we" to emphasise their differences. Through the process of change, Josie's growing maturity and John's death, the characters are united. Although they are not friends the tragedy which they both have to overcome brings them together. The consequence of this change sees the more mature Josie, setting aside school quarrels to overcome her and Ivy's differences as they grieve together. To represent this result the composer uses the collective pronoun "we," as seen when Josie first hears of John's suicide, "Oh, Josephine. What are we going to do Josephine?" The fact that Josie hears of John's death from Ivy herself also demonstrates their unity. " I realised that she wasn't Poison Ivy anymore. She was just Ivy." This quote in chapter twenty-nine is effective in summating the consequence of change that occurs in Josie's perspective of Ivy Lloyd, revealing Josie's realisation of Ivy's own vulnerability and demonstrating that Josie is no longer envious of Ivy. .
In the film text Remember the Titans, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the physical change of integrating the white school and the black school has many subsequent changes in various character's perspectives and views of one another. This, also, is a series of positive changes. Coach Boone, the black coach replacing the beloved white Coach Yoast, is at first unaccepted by the neighbours and white community.
