Hitler vs Stalin

No regimes, ever, had encompassed with such totality the people under their sway. Few had such mad ideas; none had both the technology and the readiness to kill on so huge a scale. They murdered by the million, terrorized by the hundred million and for Adolf Hitler for twelve years and Joseph Stalin for twenty-nine years, until his death, they got away with it. Although Hitler and Stalin hated each other, the two leaders were similar in many ways. Hitler and Stalin each rose to the highest position attainable in their respective countries. Both men were skilled users of propaganda, each was amoral and both had the ambition to make their countries powerful in the world. They used their words to twist and manipulate the minds of people into believing that what they were saying was the absolute truth. They used their power to get people to do whatever they wanted or be killed and since their countries were still trying to recover from World War I, they desired to restore the power back in to their countries. "Neither belonged to the traditional ruling class and it is difficult to imagine either coming to power in the world into which they were born. Their careers were possible only in the new world created by the breakdown of the old order in Europe, as a result of the First World War-of the defeat first of tsarist Russia, then of the Central Powers, and the revolution that followed"(Bullock, Alan). From the way they were raised, their rise to power and the way they ruled, both these historical monsters left an undeniable imprint on European history.
Adolf Hitler was born April 20th, 1889 in Brauna-am-Inn, Austria of German descent. Hitler's father Alois, wanted his son to study for a government position. Hitler wrote later in Mein Kampf that "the thought of slaving in an office made me ill not to be the master of my own time" (Microsoft Encarta). Hitler spent most of his time dreaming of becoming a famous painter and when he did pay attention in school he was especially interested by German History.
