Total, Roosevelt created 16 national monuments, 51 wildlife refuges and established 5 new national parks. His accomplishments are still marveled at today. He took his own love of nature and of other people and made it work to the American citizens advantage.
Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt's cousin, was president from 1933-1945. He is responsible for rescuing America from its horrible economic depression. His methods to solving this problem were called, by some, unconstitutional, but ultimately got the job done. Roosevelt was elected president based on his promises to the American public to relieve suffering, create jobs and make the economy work again. Americans were looking for a quick fix to these economical problems, and they saw in Roosevelt the confidence and aggressiveness to accomplish these goals. Roosevelt assured Americans that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." .
His plan to revive the economy was called "the New Deal," and was launched at the beginning of his first term. The most immediate result of this policy was the reviving of the banks within one hundred days of Roosevelt taking office. The New Deal functioned to reach both long term and short economic goals. Relief and stabilization of the economy was the focus of every decision. .
Another quality that made Roosevelt so popular with Americans was his ease in handling the press and the public. He wanted an open, friendly way to communicate his ideas to the public, and did this by "fireside chats". Roosevelt's "fireside chats" were a series of radio broadcasts from the president directly to American citizens. On Sunday March 12, he held the first of these chats. In this broadcast, he assured Americans of their ability to contribute in making the economy what it once was. He said, " Let us unite in banishing fear. It is your problem no less than it is mine. Together we cannot fail." He explained all of his ideas in clear, easy to understand terms that convinced listeners that the economy was under control.
