Radio

The radio is a piece of technology that has profoundly influenced the human condition because it allows people to communicate to each other from great distances and far away places. Radio has helped revolutionize the way communication is today by influencing other pieces of technology like walkie-talkies, cell phones, and other forms of wireless communications. I think that the radio has had a huge impact in our society and our way of life.
The radio was invented on December 12, 1901 by an Italian Inventor named Guglielmo Marconi when he was trying to improve upon the telegraph. "Marconi has been called the Father of Radio."1 He was listening through earphones when he heard a faint sound that sounded like it was making the letter "s" in Morse code. He later then tried it again by sending the "s" across the Atlantic Ocean. "I now felt for the first time absolutely certain that the day would come when mankind would be able to send messages without wires," he wrote, "Not only across the Atlantic but between the farthermost ends of the Earth."2 .
Marconi tried selling his idea to the Italian, but they said that they didn't want any part of it. Convinced by his family that he had a great idea, he went to England and sold them his idea. "Marconi had received a patent on his wireless and, shortly thereafter, he formed the Marconi Telegraph Company Ltd."3 Marconi designed a communication system for the British Navy using the wireless telegraph that he had invented.
I really think that it is interesting that he was able to figure out how to send and receive Morse code from far away distances. By helping the British navy, he was able to create a communication system that has evolved into the kind of technical and advanced system it is today. Without it, ships in distress couldn't send for help as quickly as the wanted to, or like other ships wouldn't be able to communicate during war situations.
