Rap is Poetry of Today

 

            Rap might not be poetry to most literature professors or the Academy of American Poets, but I would ask them what poetry is. I licked up some definitions online of what poetry actually is. Poetry is a means of expression. Poets use language to express an idea: to make it tangible in a form that can be shared. That is why we say that books, paintings,.
             musical compositions and films are poetic. Some modern poets claim that poetry is a way to access the individual and collective unconscious experience of life. A poem may serve a purpose, such as sharing an emotion, teaching a lesson, commenting on society, describing a mood, or conveying any other theme the whatever the author wishes. .
             I would tell the Academy of American Poets that rap is the poetry of today just like rock and roll was a few years ago. It is how the rapper expresses himself and the life he experiences he or she has. Poetry is meant to be expression. Something that others can understand and possible relate too.
             Even if some professors would admit that rap might possibly be poetry; most would not say it is any good. I"d tell them that it is some of the best stuff out. There are a heck of a lot more people out there right now that can understand and feel rap than they can William Carlos Williams work. Rappers, or the poets of today express themselves in ways the common street person can understand. Rap is poetry for the uneducated folk today, although I"m not saying educated people can not understand it or don't like it. .
             In my 4 page paper coming up I would like to write about the best Poet alive right now. Eminem. His lyrics are incredible and a lot of people can learn from them. I would like to write on either "8 Mile" or "Loose Yourself.".
