He compares Hamlet to the Greek mythological character Oedipus Rex. The myth has Oedipus condemned by fate to kill his father Laius and sleep with his mother. This was also a strong belief of Elizabethans as they deemed providence as the outcome of people's lives rather than the decisions they made.
From Hamlet's first soliloquy in Act 1 Scene 2 we already know that he feels disgraced by his mother's hasty marriage to Claudius, "But two months dead - nay, not so much, not two". The Michael Almereyda production (starring Ethan Hawke) has this scene as a press conference rather than the original king's court. Almereyda emphasises Hamlet's resentment and humiliation by making him feel excluded by choice as he is seen standing up slouching, wearing sunglasses compared to the other smart representatives of the Denmark Corporation (notably instead of country) who are well composed and assertive in their appearance. The director used this to make Hamlet look disrespectful which gives a further inclination of his extreme antipathy for his uncle and perhaps more so than we see in the original play. It is debatable but we can see from Hamlet's first soliloquy that he is suffering from the Oedipal complex, "To post With such dexterity to incestuous sheets!". This confirms that Hamlet's mind revolves around sex if not his sexuality but definitely his mothers" as he doesn't consider the other downfalls to their marriage not nearly enough as Gertrude's and Claudius" sexual relationship. "Must I remember? Why, she would hang on him, as if increase of appetite had grown", this is also in Hamlet's first soliloquy and is essential in understanding how Shakespeare's character is suffering from the Oedipal complex. He resents how his mother used to hang on to his father as if she had too much appetite for love. This may well suggest that Hamlet may have begrudged her before her "hasty" marriage because it seems as if he has a problem with her and her relationship with men as if he wants her for himself only.
