             Reading Comprehension research has a long and rich history, when examining the process of reading comprehension and the effective instruction of it. What comprehension is, how comprehension occurs and how to teach comprehension have driven hundreds of research studies in the last 30 years. Most of what is known has been learned since the early 1970's. Reading comprehension and how to teach it, is probably the area of literacy about which we as educators have the most knowledge and most consensus. However, it is also probably the area that receives the least attention in the classroom. .

             Introduction.

             A chapter "Effective Practices for Developing Reading Comprehension written by Nell K. Duke and David P. Pearson from a book titled, "-What Research Has to Say About Reading Research- by Alan E. Farstrup and Jay S. Samuels will be used to examine reading comprehension. Four questions will guide this examination:.
             What are teachers understanding of reading comprehension, how do they instruct reading comprehension and what strategies they use? .
             It is argued that there is considerable research on effective comprehension instruction, but that much of this research is not reflected in classroom practice. Is this true?.
             Reading comprehension is addressed in a number of commercial reading programs. With respect to reading comprehension, what should teachers look for in evaluating these programs?.
