4) Discuss Dufay's harmonic style. The harmonic style of Dufay must be discussed in terms of triadic movement although it is unlikely that he thought in those terms. Triads are the basic harmonic unit out of which his phrases grow. He thought in terms of intervalic relationships between voices. This forms the basis of all harmony. One of the great accomplishments of the Renaissance is his careful method of handling dissonance. This is a keen insight into his harmonic style. His techniques for underpinning the structure of a composition by carefully planned networks of tonal cadences were widely imitated and led to sixteenth-century tonality. He literally created the musical Renaissance. .

6) Discuss how the text and music fit together in "Ave Maria virgo serena". Ave Maria virgo serena is one of Josquin's best known works and represents the formation of his style because of his mastery at setting of a rhymed prayer to the Virgin Mary. Each line of the text is given new music in the form of imitation and non- imitation. A musical shape was given to match the quatrains into which the text falls. The individual lines in Ave Maria are simple and straightforward and conceived vocally. There are fewer melismas than in the earlier motets. This is an example of Josquin's increased desire for the relationship between words and music to be more balanced with regard to text declamation.
