Evaluation of High School Textbook

.
The average number of the new words in a unit is about forty. However, some of them are proper names and some are prepositions. Besides these two kinds of words, there are only twenty five new words in a unit. I think it seems not enough. The teacher spends about a week for each unit, and there are four to five hours of class per week. That is to say, students may learn only five new words a day if the teacher didnt provide them extra reading materials. I think teachers should give students some related articles or activities to practice, so that they can learn much vocabulary. It seems that the vocabulary items are presented in a systematic gradation, from simple to complex. For example, in Unit One, ordinals are introduced, which are very basic in a language. However, in Unit Eight, some abstract emotional adjectives are included, such as wonderful, nervous, and awful. There are also some very useful idioms in the lessons, such as walk the dog, dig in, my goodness, and surf the Net. Moreover, the vocabulary focuses on local expressions, such as pearl milk tea, mapo tofu, and beef noodle. This kind of vocabulary connects textbook with students' life, which can help them learn better and more effectively. The vocabulary items appeared in the unit many times. We can find them in almost every parts of the unit. The repetition is a good way of reinforcement. .
The sentences in the textbook are all quite short. I think it's good for students of this level because they may have some difficulties in reading when the sentences are too long. However, the sentences become slightly more complicated in latter units to suit their growing reading ability. For example, there may be two ideas in one sentence. But still, the sentences are very clear and understandable. The context is presented as dialog, which gives students an authentic situation to learn things from it. Moreover, the sentences are combined more sensibly and logically in this way.
