By the 1700's two large settlements had been established, Chesapeake and the New England regions, both had many distinct characteristics between the both of them. The two settlements had many distinct differences between which included society differences such as the difference in religious back round, difference in economic back round, and also differences in social status between members of the settlement. The people of New England settlement had many different reasons for coming to the new land then did the people of the Chesapeake settlement. The New Englanders were basically poor Protestants seeking land that they were unable to receive over in England, but the Chesapeake people were usually wealthy nobles looking to gain riches from the abundance of land. This situation causes many differences in society especially social status, religion, and personal wealth in the economy.
The first major difference between the two settlements was economic back round. New Englanders were usually poor and seeking land that they were unable to receive while Chesapeake people were usually rich and seeking land for large estates. New Englanders usually brought many people along with them, which included servants, so they would be able to start a community and gain wealth through the hard work of the community. (Doc B) On the other hand, there was the Chesapeake that was usually settled by the wealthy who were seeking to gain large estates. With the two different types of settlement, this caused many social differences.
Differences in social status is very clear do to the two different types of settlement. New Englanders believed in a strong community so that they all could prosper and become a whole. (Doc A&B) This caused New England to have a strong middle class, but also do to New England not wanting outsiders, this caused them to not have very many job opportunities. Furthermore, Chesapeake had many wealthy people come over by themselves and try to build a huge estate which led people to come to the Chesapeake because of all the job opportunities (Doc C), which in addition led to a very big class distinction between the wealthy class and the poor class.
