"Bless Me, Ultima": the elements of humor.

When misfortunes happen to other people, the results are laughter. When innocent people are made fun of for other people's entertainment, people laugh. Comedy has everything to do with timing. The scene of the school play in "Bless Me, Ultima", is funny because of timing. Like the whole play began as a tiny snowball, and by the time it ended it had become into a massive boulder of comedy, due to the chain of events that happened.
The first sign of trouble came with Abel and his need to pee. The reader knew that Abel was in dire need to pee when he told Miss Violet that he had to go. He was holding the front of his pants as children do when they really have to relieve themselves. Miss Violet, already having been annoyed with the rest of the children's mischief, said, "No". Then Anaya (the author) threw in Lloyd to stir up things a little. Everytime Abel said he had to go, Miss Violet wouldn't listen or refuse to let him go, Lloyd would say, "You could be sued for that". Saying that, it focused Miss Violet's attention to Lloyd instead of Abel. So, come time for the play with Abel needing to pee, he lost his control over the pressure and let it go during the play. .
Directly following Abel's embarrassing incident, Lloyd, who in the meantime had been chewing tootsie rolls, spit a half eaten tootsie roll onto Maxie who was holding part of the scenery for the play. Then the prop he had been holding up toppled over when he stood up to clean himself. That is a good example of good timing. Able peed, Lloyd was disgusted and spit out his candy onto Maxie, Maxie stood up and tipped over the prop he had been holding. The play continues, with all the accidents that happened, the play continues.
Shortly after that chain of events the Kid came into place. He was to give the baby (doll) the incense. With carelessness he threw the incense (crayon) box at the doll, the head of the doll fell off and rolled to center stage.
