Psychological crime theories assume that individual differences in behavior may make some people more predisposed to committing criminal acts. Psychological theories include different theories such as Psychoanalytic Theory, Moral Development Theory, Maternal Deprivation Theory, and Learning Theory. By analyzing Frank's criminal behavior, we could discover that he is presenting a mixture of these theories.
Psychoanalytic Theory, according to Sigmund Freud, all humans have natural drives and urges repressed in the unconscious. Furthermore, all humans have criminal tendencies. Through the process of socialization, however, these tendencies are controlled by the development of inner feelings that are learned through childhood experience. Freud noticed that people who felt guilty because of their hating to certain people such as their parents committed crimes in order to be punished and as a result to feel better. Frank had an anger feeling towards his mother because she cheated on his father and she left the house and got married with another man, maybe he felt guilty about having such feeling and was relieved by being punished later. Furthermore, his criminal behavior provided him with a pleasure which he did not find at home.
In the Moral Development Theory concerned about the development of moral reasoning. Lawrence Kohlberg posited that there are three levels of moral reasoning, each consisting of two stages. During middle childhood, children are at the first level of moral development. At this level, the pre conventional level, moral reasoning is based on avoiding punishment. The second level, the conventional level of moral development, is reached at the end of middle childhood. Here individuals believe in and have adopted the values of society.
