Descartes believe that our senses deceive us; just like in an optical allusion. We cannot really trust our senses because our senses would just tell us what would be most reasonable at the time. Descartes also believes that it is impossible to distinguish between the dream world and the reality world that we live in. Plato's views are also expressed in this excerpt; Plato believed that there were two worlds: the sensory world and the reasoning world. The sensory world is the world we live in and the reasoning world is the world that is out there, where true knowledge can be attained. Plato believed that true knowledge could not be attained through the sensory world, because our senses would deceive us once again. True knowledge could only be gained through the reasoning world. When the man judged the bum as just a bum, he was seeing him through the sensory world because he could not see past who he was. When in the reasoning world he finally realized that he was something else.
Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus.
             Excerpt #2.
In the second excerpt from Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus the narrator talks about how an educational theory says that to learn something we have to hear it 200 times and we also need to unlearn what we once knew before. The narrator goes on to say that we have been programmed by others to what we know now but he states that we are pioneers. And what someone else may know may not be what is always right. The narrator states that we are in "new territory". I believe what the narrator means by all of this is that humans in this world have a very hard time understanding what is really true; what we have been told and shown is one thing, but what is really out there is another. We humans believe what we have been told because that is the only thing that we know, and we have a hard time getting away from it. I believe it is just like when people thought that the solar system revolved around the Earth, but then realized that it revolves around the sun.
