Of course not everyone sees that way. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wants states to stop the action of gay marriages. Politicians are continuously arguing whether San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom overstepped his authority in marrying same-sex couples. There was a huge gathering to honor San Francisco's newly married couples. The marriage of Del Martin, 83, and Phyllis Lyon, 79, longtime leaders in the lesbian community was the focus of the affair. They were the first of three thousand gay couples married since February twelfth by Mayor Newsom, and despite protests from conservative groups, city officials were expected to continue issuing licenses.(Californian Politicians Debate Gay Weddings, 1) In an interview with NBC, Schwarzenegger stated, "In San Francisco, it is license for marriage of the same sex. Maybe the next thing is another city that hands out licenses for assault weapons and someone else hands out licenses for selling drugs, I mean you can't do that." (Californian Politicians Debate Gay Weddings, 1) It's sad to think of the way some people may have been affected by that statement, because the gestures he was making really don't pertain to the issue of gay marriages whatsoever. Gavin Newsom made an excellent statement in return. " It's not about AK-47's. It's not about these other hypotheticals. It's about these human beings. It's about human dignity It's about, I think, holding truth, faith, and allegiance to the Constitution." Also in San Francisco, gay and lesbian couples won another reprieve. Judge Ronald Evans Quidachay declined to stop San Franciscans from granting marriage licenses.
