Bridget Jones's Diary

For example, her friend Jude is throwing a party and Bridget does not receive her invitation. Soon she learns that everyone is invited to this party but her. At first she becomes very angry and tells herself that she never wanted to be invited in the first place. Gradually Bridget becomes depressed because she tells herself that Jude has forgotten about her. Although this situation does not seem amusing, humor is apparent in Bridget's fickle thoughts of her friends. The reader relates to these thoughts because Bridget is only human. Not only is humor seen in her relationships with her friends but also with her family.
Throughout the novel, the reader experiences the character of Bridget's mother. This older, over-bearing woman plays an important role in Bridget's life. Not only is she her mother, but she is also a "friend". In the novel, Bridget experiences her mother's domineering ways when she constantly tells Bridget what to do. A good example would be when she asks Bridget to come to the Darcy's party. .
""Now, darling,"" she [Mother] suddenly hissed, ""you will be coming to Geoffrey and Una's New Year's Day Turkey Curry Buffet this year, won't you?"".
""Ah. Actually, I- I [Bridget] panicked wildly. What could I pretend to be doing? " think I might have to work on New Year's Day."".
""Now come along, darling. Una and Geoffrey have been holding the New Year buffet since you were running round the lawn with no clothes on. Of course you"re going to come. And you"ll be able to use your new suitcase"" (9).
Although Bridget tries to escape her mother's persistent dominance, her mother subdues her into going. The humor appears when Bridget's thoughts tend to veer into her mother's wishes.
Finally, Bridget's inconsistency with her romantic relationships adds to the humor of the novel. In the beginning, the reader learns that Bridget wants a long-term relationship. Her feelings toward a relationship deepen when she is constantly with her married and dating friends.
