In today's society, religion plays a large role in molding one's beliefs and their attitudes towards certain changes in technology. As in Brave New World, our religious society has repeatedly told the world what is acceptable and what is not. This then becomes the overall belief of those willing to submit themselves to this belief. In this particular story, the effects of this repeated learning technique is different. Those in the society expressed by Huxley learn everyday knowledge from repeated recordings during their sleep. However different the results may be, the techniques are still similar and result in the believing of the overly expressed idea. Religion must however be looked at broadly, due to the numerous types of religions, and considered when deciding whether or not to permit genetic engineering. Questions must be asked in order to look out for the best interest of everyone.
On the opposite side of the argument, many would agree that it would be in the best interest of the United States as a whole to participate in the genetic modification of its people. If technology improves so greatly that this task becomes possible, then perhaps there are other more fearful things that we should be worrying about instead. Our country would be in dire need of intelligent and physically able citizens to aid in any other affairs that may be going on. It is pure fact that today's society is striving to be greater than the society of our neighboring nations. It is a constant challenge going on between the different powers of the world, a challenge in which every country desires to be on top. If our country chooses not to participate in gene modification, then another country will most definitely choose to accept it in attempt to become greater than the United States. This would result in less power and make us vulnerable to those countries which oppose us. By choosing to remain clear of the rising technology, the United States will be sacrificing its own people to the hands of those around them.
