If the unmotivated could find out for themselves that hiking is actually fun, then exercise would become second nature.
The thing about hiking is that unlike other recreational activities, the aged person can enjoy it and is strongly encouraged to do so. Our society treats the aged person with kid gloves and they are discouraged from being active. We tell them to rest when it is actually good for them to be moving around and exercising. A study shows that regular exercise slows and even prevents the aging of the immune system. Immunologists have thought for a long time that the immune system declined naturally with age. However, a study has shown that physically active women in their 70's showed that their immune systems were as active as those of young adult's. Leading an inactive lifestyle is the culprit that hastens the aging process not aging. Hiking and walking also reverse the negative effects of osteoporosis by increasing the density of the bones and decreasing the rate of calcium loss. In result, it strengthens the bones so they won't break easily. (American Hiking Society)Therefore, you can hike all the more!.
Hiking is an inexpensive and simpler way to treat depression than by pills, injections, and therapy. It is impractical for a doctor to recommend that a patient suffering from depression go out and do something recreational like surfing or windsailing. Walking and hiking though is simple and doesn't take an overt amount of energy if you don't want that kind of a challenge. Walking briskly causes the release of calming brain chemicals called endorphins, which are natural tranquilizers. Adrenaline is also released. If the adrenaline is not released from the body it accumulates and results in muscle tension and feelings of anxiety. (American Hiking Society) Since depression is usually an effect or the cause of inactivity, the release of these chemicals can make a big difference in the way a person feels.
