Gambling

Actually Nevada has helped uncover some of the worst point shaving incidents of the 40's, 50's, and 90's according to The Los Angeles Times. "I am not a proponent of gambling, but I am a realist. History demonstrates that a ban on legal betting will not reduce the threat of point-shaving schemes. It will only increase the risk that history will repeat," (Newell, S7). This quote was by Coach Newell of the Lakers, University of San Francisco, and University of California. He has been through many point shaving incidents. In his quote he is basically saying that by stopping gambling in Nevada does not assure that all gambling will stop. In reality the illegal gambling and point shaving will be at its worst because there will be no more legal gambling left. But then the question comes up, Where does all the gambling happen? The answer is college campuses and illegal bookies. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, "NCAA officials and others involved in the issue concede that far more money is bet illegally than legally across the country, and that every campus has student bookies," (Suggs, A48). This states the every campus has student bookies. That means that in every college across America students could place bets with their fellow classmates. The same goes for student-athletes, they could also go to the bookies and place bets. This makes the sport unethical and not worthy of amateur status. According to www.ncaa!.
org, "A study by the University of Cincinnati of 648 Division I intercollegiate men's basketball and football respondents indicated that 25.5% had gambled money on other college sporting events, 3.7% had gambled money on a game in which they had played, and that 0.5% received money from a gambler for not playing well in a game." This proves that student-athletes definitely do bet on college sports. .
It is also shocking that some of them have bet on their own game, and/or received money for not playing well.
