Online Communities; Advantages and Disadvantages

Being able to communicate via the internet is also advantageous to people who need to stay in touch with relatives and friends who live a distance away and it is less expensive than long-distance phone charges (Haase, Hampton, Wellman, Witte 6-7,10). .
             A disadvantage to these virtual communities is that some people may get "addicted.".
             They enjoy the "intimacy among strangers," the feeling of being anonymous and the fact that people can't easily discern the emotion that they may be feeling since their facial expressions and body language can't be read. (Klein 3, Song 5,6). People may choose to meet face-to-face, but.
             since people like "trying on" different personalities, you may not be meeting the person that you think you know. There are numerous instances that show this could also be potentially dangerous. .

             (289). While on-line chat is advantageous, one must become familiar with the internet and computer applications in general. Computer technology is still alien to many people, and when these people finally become "computerized," they are faced with stress and time constraints.
