Newspaper Importance

The Advertisements in the Times go along with that theory because they advertise world travel, cell phones, expensive jewelry, mutual funds and stock brokers, and graduate school opportunities. .
While the Times is an excellent source of national news, most of the population living outside of New York desires information regarding local events and occurrences. This is where papers like the Star Tribune come in. The Star Tribune is one of two competing conflict-orientated papers in the Twin Cities, the other being the Pioneer Press. The Star Tribune is similar in some ways to the New York Times. The Tribune uses objective writing in the neutral sections, and has a local news section within the paper. However, the Star Tribune is different in the areas of which stories are covered, and how they are covered. .
On the front page of the September 27, 2000 edition of the Star Tribune, there is very large picture of the United States Women's Softball Team. The picture is a captured moment of celebration, as the softball team had just defeated Japan for the gold medal in Sydney, Australia. If you look at the front page of the New York Times on the very same day, you won't see a picture, and you won't see "Gold!" in large font, but you will see a small little blurb about it in the lower left corner. Why is there such a big difference? Because the papers are selling two different frames of mind. .
On one hand, you have the Times, which is offering national and international news that has importance or significance to people around the nation, and the world. Here in Minnesota, several of the stories that the Times offer are of no interest to a majority of readers. Furthermore, it appears that the Tribune is suggesting that Minnesotan's are sensitive as well as enthusiastic about human-interest stories. Human-interest stories are, according once again to Campbell, "news accounts that focus on the trials and tribulations of the human condition, often featuring ordinary individuals facing extraordinary challenges.
