Educational Issues In Today's Society

 

            Every student should be offered the opportunity to be successful in our changing world through the combined effort of educators, parents, and the community. This can be achieved in several ways. I believe that educators should unite to attain a well-rounded curriculum that provides basic skills and individualized instruction for every student's educational needs. Teachers should explain, motivate, encourage, and value the worth of every student. Classrooms should continuously be learning and requiring high expectations of student performance. Educators should put children first, acknowledge their individual learning skills, and help the student achieve success. Educators are successful when they have prepared every student to be a positive, as well as successful, contributor in society. .
             Equity Vs Equality.
             The issue of whether you can achieve equity without equality has been widely debated. It is an important issue because it concerns our primary education system. A variety of different arguments have been put forward about this issue. The following will consider arguments for equity and will point to some of the problems with this view. I will then put forth reasons how by looking to equality, you achieve equity. .
             Equity is qualitative and concerns issues of justice and fairness. It is the state, quality, or ideal of being just, impartial, and fair (Northwest Educational Technology Consortium, 1999). Aristotle describes it as the sort of justice that goes beyond the written law (Walton, 1990). It has been argued that educators should seek to reach equity. After all, it provides fairness for all people. Walter Secada argues that we should work towards equitable inequalities that reflect the needs and strengths of the various groups. However, equity should not work on its own in our education system.
             While equity is related to "fairness," equality means "sameness." Equality is quantitative and concerns parity among groups.
