My Man Godfrey

With all its laughs, however, it also carries a reminder of reality that makes people realize their own frailties.
The film carried themes such as servants and employers, class differences, and life during the Depression Era. This film is supposed to be a screwball comedy with a message for everyone. The central message is that poverty is not from shortcomings, but of the misfortune and variety of your choice of economic style. For example, if you spend all your money on silly things that are not necessary for the family or a business, then poverty is caused by your carelessness. Complete poverty is not caused by a lost pay check or by paying bills, it is caused by personal decisions. This message is carried out by a schizophrenic tone throughout the film. By having this nutty family be part of an upper class society, the butler is seen as more down to earth then the entire family. This provides satirical and witty elements that tie into the tone. .
With this tone set for the film, I feel that the filmmaker wanted the audience to respond with an open mind, claiming that anything is possible. For example, the film harbored the idea that the homeless can work as waiters in a nightclub at the dump. The filmmaker used this idea for a positive fantasy during the depression. Maybe these positive fantasies have unintended messages for the film. There are no unintended messages about money situations, however but some for love. Some people might walk away and feel its necessary to pursue your love interest and others might feel not to rush love, but to let it take its course. This was the comedic parts of the film, Irene and Godfrey's love tale. Irene is head over heels in love with Godfrey, and he does not even want to step into that water. Finally, at the end Irene does win when she convinces Godfrey their little ceremony will only take a minute. .
From making an analysis, I feel that My Man Godfrey has revealed the personalities and attitudes of the people during the times of the Depression.
