Position Paper

Today, some of the Native American languages and traditions still exist today. Tribes such as the Tainos and the Arawaks created a lot of the words used in the English and Spanish language. There are many Native American organizations that still keep the culture alive and practice their traditions. There are still, although very small, areas where indigenous people still exist. Statistics and evidence can prove most of these arguments.
"Although it is rarely stated there is a clear implication that, for all of its cruelty, the extinction of this people at the hands of the Spanish could almost be seen as a blessing in disguise." (Johnson 1) The Spanish protected the Tainos from the human flesh eating Carib tribe. The Caribs were about to work their way up to Taino territory until the Spanish came. The Tainos named Caribbean towns such as Utuado, Mayaguez, Caguas, and Humacao that still exist today. Names of food were also used by the Tainos such as mani and yuca. In the English language, Native created certain words such as hurricane and hammock. There are many parts of the United States and South America where indigenous people still exist. They have their own government and society. Although these are somewhat strong arguments, there are many down sides to them.
The Carib tribe was definitely going to eat the Tainos alive, but the Spanish killed the majority of Indians. The Native Americans that committed suicide did it because they could not stand being tortured and abused by the Spanish. This is the real reason why many Native American civilizations are not with us today. Many of the words and names they used are still used today, but that doesn't give people the right to use them. The Spanish stole the Taino language, as well as many other things. The cultures that exist on the territory that was once dominated by Native Americans are not native cultures. The Native Americans that still exist are most likely the last of their king and fighting for their land.
