In my study a high level of formal education is whether or not the subject attended college. The second hypothesis: white people have higher levels of social prestige than non-whites. In my research study race is white, black, or other. My third hypothesis: having an education represents the level of social prestige you will have, regardless of race.
Sample.
In my research study I am using secondary data from the 1998 General Social Survey. The General Social Survey uses probability sampling when gathering respondents for the survey. The GSS is a 90 minute face to face interview, it asks over 500 questions. The University of Chicago conducts this survey. It has been conducted annually from 1972-1992 and biannually from 1992-present. The GSS allows me to extend the scope of my study. I have the ability to analyze 2832 respondent surveys in my current study. I am able to conduct this study making use of already collected data. It is very efficient and cost effective. .
Method.
I tested my hypothesis by conducting several different statistical techniques. The first statistical technique I used was descriptive statistics. This statistical technique displayed for me histograms and stem-and-leaf plots. It also gave me important information about the variables, such as: mean, median, range, standard deviation, and skew-ness. I also used cross-tabulations to find gamma, chi squared, and percentage differences. I used a simple bivariate correlation to find Pearson's r. I utilized partial correlations to find partial r for two variables. I also performed multiple linear regression analysis to find the unstandardized slope for b and the standardized slope for beta, this also allowed me to control for different variables. .
Results.
The first statistical measure I used was descriptive statistics. I analyzed three different variables: prestg80, age, and educ. I was able to analyze all three of the variables.
