Serbian Cuisine

 

            
            
             Yugoslavia is a country that was once made up of many states that included Macedonia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia. Since the many wars that have occurred in this country, Yugoslavia is now made up of only two states; Serbia and Montenegro. Serbian Cuisine is like no other. Even though Serbia is considered to be a Slavic country, there foods and diets differ from many of the other Slavs. Serbian food is rare and original. .
             Being that half of the country is poor, many people especially the ones that live on the farms don't really have many options to choose from when it comes to eating. Like Americans, we have all types of ingredients, foods, spices, flavors, etc. to choose from from our local supermarkets. Serbian's do not have these options.
             As soon as you walk into most Serbian households, the women whether being the wife or daughter of the family will serve you slatko, which is fruit preserves on a tray with cups of water to wash it down with. Sugar and water or honey can also be served as well. This is done not only in the morning but all through out the day. Usually for breakfast, Serbians will have coffee, preferably Turkish coffee. Also when preparing a breakfast, it is usually served in large portions. Everything in that country is served in large portions. There is no such thing as small portions being served. Now for breakfast, the wife of course will cook eggs and bacon, cut up some tomatoes and cucumbers along with kajmak, which is a homemade type of butter made from milk to spread over freshly homemade break or corn bread. .
             One reason why many Serbian families are used to large portions of food being served is because majority of the time, once the daughter of a household gets married, she moves in with her husband's family. So usually there are two generations of families living under one roof. Serbian people are very friendly. They accept anyone and everything especially when it comes to food.
