Steroids In Baseball

"Offense is a drug, the opiate of the masses" (Daly). This quote sums up the attitude of the players and owners entirely. In modern times, fans only want to see highly productive offenses and homeruns, therefore, high scoring games and long homeruns are sought after by players, owners, and fans alike. Owners are faced with the tough decision between testing for steroids and eliminating upper echelon players from baseball or losing valuable fans. With this major dilemma on their hands, owners must make a decision. Whatever decision is made, fans and players alike need to respect the game for its purity. I feel that eliminating steroids completely is the only way for the game to survive.
Unfortunately, kids- who are the future of baseball, have seen nothing but "Going, going, gone" (Daly). Eliminating steroids from the game might deter these kids from the game because they came to see homeruns, not doubles up the middle or sacrifice bunts. Baseball is sending out a negative message to these kids. The message is that steroids are okay and it's fine to take them. .
This is not the first time Major League Baseball has made a tough decision. Another current negative trait associated with baseball is chewing tobacco. This trait was recognized and shun by the fans and player's association, consequently the players slowly quit chewing tobacco. This was good for the game as a whole because the players recognized everyone's disapproval and the negative example they were showing. Now, baseball needs to recognize that steroids are a much worse example and give it up. If baseball players can just look back and learn from previous mistakes and their positive outcomes, the game will thrive once again.
A major reason people might oppose the banning of steroids is because it enhances a player" performance ergo making the game more interesting. "Why take steroids anyway?. not good pitching" (Boyle). Some of the players and owners agree that steroids should not be banned mainly because offense is addicting like a drug, and all the players and owners want to win, at any cost.
