The major I have chosen is Biological Chemistry. I have chosen this field of study because I find it interesting and there is always something new to discover in the world of chemistry. Also, this field of study covers pre med requirements if I want to go to medical school. This way if I don't like biochemistry that much I can go into the medical field if I want to. I will have to transfer to the main campus for this major because all of the courses are not at the Stark Campus. .
Some of the fields of study covered are chemistry, biology, and biochemistry. To graduate with this major there is a required 121 total hours and 42 of those have to be upper division. Some of the required courses are General Chemistry I, II, the university LER's, Basic sciences, and Calculus I, II. Two of the professors at the Kent State Stark Campus are Andrew Burns and Clarke Earley. Andrew Burns graduated with a Ph.D. from Brown University. Clarke Earley also graduated with a Ph.D., but from the University of Illinois. .
There are many opportunities that I found for getting scholarships. Some of the scholarships are the Leppo Family Medallion scholarship, which pays full tuition, the Vinyl Scholarship, Knauss Chemistry scholarship, and Lubrizal Scholarship all worth $1500. There is a limit of only one of each. There was no financial aid that I could find for chemistry major students. There is a Science Learning Community at the main campus. This is for students majoring in science related fields. This program puts all the science majors together, where they will live together, be in some of the same classes and have more interaction with professors.(SLC).
Some of the careers that a major in chemistry prepares me for are careers in pharmaceuticals, at an environmental testing company, or working for the government as a biochemist. In pharmaceuticals there is involvement in the testing and discovery of antibiotics, antihistamines, steroid hormones, vitamins, and many other kinds of drugs.
