A lot of people are not really capable of running a computer. Allot of high school graduates are more capable of running computers than most of the people who had graduated even five year ago. It's just been recently that computers have begun to play such a big role. People need to be computer literate or wired and plugged in today's society.
             Computer literate, the ability to understand fundamental computer concepts, operates a personal computer, and navigates the Internet.

             MS-DOS is the first program that most people learned to use. MS-DOS uses what is known as a command-line interface, an operating system in which the user would key a command as an instruction to perform a desired activity. The computer would display a blank screen with a prompt such as C:. The user would type in commands (a string of abbreviated codes telling the computer what to do). The introduction of the IBM PC in 1981 started the intro of DOS, millions of users became familiar with the DOS. Although by using DOS you would have to know hundreds of different commands to do any job. For example to open a document the user keyed the pathname EXAM1:CMY DOCUMENTSEXAMSEXAM1. The commands where needed because of the limited graphical display capabilities.
             In 1985, Microsoft responded to the popularity of the MAC-OS by introducing Microsoft Windows software. The early Windows operation system provided a shell that essentially converted the commands needed in the DOS system into pull-down menus, icons, file folders, and dialog boxes. Windows 95 adopted a version-naming convention that was tied to the year of release. It offered improved networking capabilities and memory handling, a superior interface. From then on Windows has achieved widespread success because it was compatible with a broad range of hardware and software.
