The Impact Of Diversity On The Management Of Organizations

 

Title VII took that one step further to include "sweeping provisions against employer, employment agency, and union discrimination cover(ing) almost all of the ways that these parties might disadvantage employees, clients, or members because of their race, color, sex, religion, or national origin (Fisher 427)." While most discrimination cases do involve women it is important to realize that men and women are protected equally.
             Sexual stereotyping is often a problem when talking about gender differences. Some employers assume women only act "feminine" or assign them to "feminine" jobs. This often results in problems because employers think a woman is not aggressive or a woman gets in trouble for being aggressive.
             Women in the workplace are also protected under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, which makes "discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions illegal (Fisher 434)." A woman cannot be fired or refused a job because of pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition. Employers must give pregnant women sick leave, disability insurance and health insurance if applicable. .
             Sexual Harassment is an issue that is always mentioned in the news. Sexual harassment includes sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Sexual harassment happens one of two ways: either a superior threatens an inferior if they do not perform an act, or a superior blatantly makes physical contact with an inferior thinking that they will be too intimidated to do anything about it. Again, sexual harassment mostly happens to women, but can happen to men as well, like I saw in the movie "Disclosure." That is why the law says superior and inferior, and not man and woman. .
             Title VII protects people of different genders. It does not, however, protect on the basis of sexual orientation or transsexuality. .
             If there are so many laws and regulations against gender discrimination, then, besides the legal aspect, why would an organization be inclined to hire more women and make their workforce more diverse? It is because the impact of women in the workforce is undeniable.
