Life in Traditional India

These were the vaisyas. Like the brahmans and kshatryiyas the vaisyas had the right to be taught the Veda but even with that right there was still a lot of inferiority. Since all the greater positions were taken, the vaisyas became farmers. Soon though they were more than that and became wealthy landowners, with huge taxes to pay. So even though they weren't all working in the field they were still fulfilling the main purpose of their caste by helping "maintain the priestly caste- which was what they were there for all along.
One of the least valuable castes was the sudras. These people had no chance of ever moving up during the life they had being a sudra. Looked d upon for past sins they had to work for the wealthy landowners just to survive. They were paid well enough and treated decently for the most part because of the laws protecting them. Minor taxation was given to them but the people did have to do forced labor for the country once or twice a month. Obviously, the want was great to die and move on to a better life.
The lowest of all castes were called the untouchables they were made up of many different sub castes the most common of which was the candaas. The life of someone in such a caste would be considered almost unbearable by American standards. Hated so much and considered so impure, members of the caste would carry "clappers- as to warn off any high caste group of their whereabouts so they may not be polluted. If the mistake were made of even accidentally coming within the eyesight of an upper caste human they could be beaten unconscious therefore the untouchables made sure to avoid any such incidents and lived their lives being though of as the "vilest dregs of the human species-.
No matter what social division anyone is in each has a set of traditions that they dutifully follow. Some seem to go beyond extremes other seem as though not enough is done yet each tradition is done as if done.
