Beatle Mania

While in Germany Stu Sutcliffe, seeing little promise making money in music, decided to return to his real love, art. He also ran off with a woman he met in Germany and later died from a brain hemorrhage that he is believed to have suffered during a bar fight. The remaining four returned to Liverpool, where they finally got a break and their luck started to change. A young storeowner named Brian Epstein noticed the potential in what was then the "Silver Beatles." He convinced them to change their image and they traded their leather jackets for matching suits. With their new look, Epstein's business capabilities, and the groups raw talent, they were finally beginning to have some success. The group decided they wanted to change their drummer so they dropped Pete Best and picked up Ringo Starr, whom they befriended in Germany. Ringo was now their official drummer; however, when they recorded "Love Me Do" a studio musician was used to play his part. The fans did not like the change. It's noted that along with usual girls screaming at the top of their lungs, there was also a constant chant of "Pete forever, Ringo, Never." Despite all the controversy the band faced and the constant fighting, the Beatles were gaining an immense amount of popularity in Europe. Their fame in Europe, however, was miniscule in comparison to what they would experience in America (Franco). .
In one day, during a marathon ten hour recording session, the Beatles recorded ten songs to be added to the previously cut "Love Me Do", "P.S. I Love You", "Ask Me Why" and "Please Please Me". These fourteen songs made up their first full album, also titled Please Please Me. The singles "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me" both soared in the British charts and reached number one status. The album itself reached number one on the British charts and stayed for 29 weeks. When it was released in the United States, however, the album title was changed to Introducing the Beatles and it received disappointing sales numbers.
