What Is Art?

What is art? I have often found myself asking that very question. Steel twisted and welded into unidentifiable shapes, huge cement buildings, or baby footprints across canvas, is any of this art? According to the American Heritage Dictionary art is "The conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects.".
Art is the culmination of all the many ideas that individuals perceive as beautiful, intriguing, or fascinating. Art is everyone's creative and emotional escape from the crazy world we now live in and takes the form of music, sculpture, painting, song, speech, or any other thing that gives the creator an emotional escape. Many things can be considered art. Some people refuse to consider a giant nylon blob, full of foam balls and suspended from the ceiling art, when in reality the blob was a beautiful piece of art depicting a man and a woman intimately together. .
The artwork that influences me the most is music. Music can be one of the most moving forms of art because, instead of stimulating one visually, it stimulates through sound. Classical music has even been proven to stimulate neural impulses. Musical art can be portrayed in so many different ways, in my opinion many more than could be by different types of paintings, or sculpture. Nearly anything that is audible can be turned into music. When one thinks of music they could think of Beethoven or Bach, The Beetles or The Beach Boys, P. Diddy or Dr. Dre. To people all over the world that is music, but music can also be broomsticks against trash cans or two spoons knocking against each other. All of the different types of music I mentioned are made through emotion and feeling, as an escape from the world around us, a place where one can go where it is completely stress free. Music gives people a place to go where they can close their eyes and be in the jungles of Africa, or in the audience of a symphony orchestra.
