Explain as best you can the notion of "Mestizaje". How is it different that the "Melting Pot" and what are some good examples of it? What particular role does this notion serve in Gracias" overall theory of Hispanics? Is it something that without it his theory would have no validity? Is "Mestizaje" a property that distinguish Hisapnics from other people in the world. .
Strawberries, Watermelon, Peaches, Pineapple, Grapes, etc. All these can be wonderful components in a Fresh Fruit salad. Combining these fresh fruit with some orange juice, can make a delicious breakfast. A fruit salad is a perfect example of "Mestizaje". Mestizaje is a fusion or union of different elements, when the elements combine they make something new. Although it is a new union of parts, each part is still distinguishable and can be taken apart. For example, in the fruit salad, you can identify the different types of fruit in the salad and each are distinguishable but together the fruit is a salad not individual kinds of fruit. This notion of Mestizaje is different from the "Melting Pot" notion because in a melting pot the ingredients or elements are blended to make a whole, where the individual parts cannot be separated. To make this more clear and sticking with the "fruit" concept, take for example a fruit puree as to a fruit salad. In a fruit "smothee" or puree you can not distinguish the different fruits that went into making this puree. The fruit is blended till it all becomes one whole new mixture. This idea of Mestizaje is very important to Gracias theory of Hispanics. Gracias doesn't believe in purity among the Hispanic race. Therefore, Mestizaje is the backbone to this belief, his is claiming that because of this kind of fusion or blending of different races and classes, there is no purity. Mestizaje validates Gracias" theory. Mestizaje does to a certain degree distinguish Hispanics from the rest of the world, because that is the fusion of different races that came to make up what is a good part of most Hispanics.
