Magazine Ad

The magazine in which I found this ad was the August 2002 edition of Motor Trend Magazine. Motor Trend Magazine is oriented towards the male audience of all ages. Because the magazine has information on new cars as well as editorials on classic cars it reaches a wide range of male audiences. Men tend to be more involved with cars and the automotive community; however, I am sure some women are subscribers to Motor Trend Magazine.
This ad gives a motion picture like scene. There is a man with either his wife or his girlfriend dancing underneath the parking lot lights. There is a Chevrolet Monte Carlo conveniently placed next to the couple. Is this central to the ad? I think so. The ad is for Chevrolet but the only proof is the use of the Chevrolet symbol in the bottom right of the page. The ad suggests that if you buy a Chevrolet car you will better be able to enjoy a night out on the town with your loved one. Even though the picture is a little blurry, the people seem to be having the time of their lives. There is also a valet attendant in the background. This really has nothing to do with the ad except to maybe hinting that Chevrolet cars are high class and deserve valet parking. There is also a celebrity reference in the ad. The quote from the band AC/DC says that they are picking up their women in their Chevrolet's so they can party all night long. Finally, there is a message of reassurance from the Chevrolet car company, "We"ll Be There." This makes one think that the cars they buy are reliable and if something bad should happen they will fix it.
If the roles were reversed the meaning of the ad would not change. It would just look a little funny when the man is holding up his heel. He would still be hugging a woman so it would maintain its meaning. However, if the woman and the valet attendant were to switch roles the meaning would change. In this time of homosexual acceptance the ad would seem "politically correct.
