Hunt For Red October

Hunt for Red October is a Techno-thriller written by Tom Clancey. He is also know for his many other books that are along the themes of spy, espionage, government and social and moral conflicts within and among states. In Hunt for Red October, we find that the US and British intelligence services become aware, through smuggled out photographs, of a new submarine that the USSR, former Soviet Union, Russia) is developing and is about to launch. The focus becomes on why two forward doors are on the side of the nuclear weapons submarine. Jack Ryan, a subcontracted analyst for the CIA runs the pictures past a friend who conteplates the idea of a new "Worm" or jet propulsion that would bring in outside water and compress it and move the submarine through the water virtually soundless and without the unique signature that the "screws" or propellers give each boat or submarine--like that submarine's own fingerprint. Periodically, the US Intelligence service picks up cavatation sounds, compressions and decompression waves in the water with it sonar bouyies that are located throughout the Atlantic Ocean. Soon, these cavetations are identified as the new water propulsion system of the Red October, the newest neuclear powered submarine of the USSR. The crew is hand picked by the captain, the leadership ranks are of those who wish to seek political assylum in the United States--though this is not disclosed until near the end of the book. The remainder of the crew are young and inexperienced and also include one Soviet Party member whose job it is to see that all orders are carried out to exactness or to kill those seeking to do otherwise or to destroy the submarine itself. The Red October is picked up by a very wise US killer attack class small and fast submarine and the cavitations in the water are soon identified as the signature or fingerprint of the Red October when it is using the new water jet propulsion system.
