The submarine runs virtually silent down a system of deep water canals in the Atlantic on a course directly for the coast of the United States. As Jack Ryan, the key role played in the book, starts to analyze all of the data, he is given to thinking that the submarine is on a course to defect and not to start a neuclear war with the United States. The USSR soon relizes the same thing and an all out search by their navy to destroy the Red October causes the United States to take their actions as a threat to national security. Consequently, the US starts its own search. Jack Ryan is placed inside of the US hunt sub, causing some frustration for its captain as they were in pursuit of the Red October at the time they were told to surface. A series of thrilling and very technical discussions and explainations of the naval vessals and their design and use is detailed int he book to much effort by the author and far more detailed than can be included in a book report. Suffice it to say, that the detail is sufficient that you can actually picture in your mind the characters and their surroundings without much effort and with only a limited technical knowledge of the naval vessals of either country. While political bantering occures top-side between diplomats of each contry, the search and persuit continues at a feverish pace under water in some of the deepest areas of the Atlantic Ocean's valleys. Thrilling near misses and silent runs to detect each other and attacks by both the US and USSR Navy from above are performed causing the reader to even have anxiety over the possible outcome. Upon nearing the US territorial waters, a neuclear leak is detected in the Red October that causes all but the senior crew members to evacuate the submarine. Unknown to the senior crew memebers, a second "rogue" Party Member stays behind, understanding that the intentions of the captain and senior crew are to defect and to deliver this newest neclear submarine and its propulsion system to the US's custody in tacks and undamaged.
