Art Critique

In Christ (2001), a human being and clouds are combined using this technique. The human being's stomach and the clouds are from two separate pictures. Clouds became the bowels of the human in this work. However, it is obvious that the clouds make the bowels, so this work is successful in using this technique. Also, this work's main focus is a mask that is covering a human's face because this mask makes the man appear dead. In The Wind (1997), she describes the wind using clouds. The motion of the wind is shown through the clouds. This work is very innovative. In addition, the tree serves an important role because it helps make the sound of the wind. It allows me to visualize the motion of the wind. Without the tree it would be difficult to envision the cloud as wind. The next technique used is overlaying by drawing in black ink. I found four examples using this technique. In Cactus 2 (1998), she overlaps a desert with a black cactus that she drew, and this black cactus, harmonized with the desert, makes a shadow in this photograph. In The Small Tree (1998) using the same technique, she draws two or three trees in the picture which consists solely of desert and clouds. In The Volcano (1997) once again using this technique, she draws the volcano in the sky. Finally, in The Church (1995), she overlays the vault of the church in order to make it dim. These techniques opened me up a to a completely new form of photography, so in my opinion they are very successful. The artist says that Susana writhes very much in The Susana & Death (1995). From this photograph, I can see that Susana wants to die very much because she holds the skeleton in her hands, and this represents her longing for death. The artist also describes Susana's isolation in Candlelight (1998) and in The Candle (1996). In Candlelight (1998), a candle indirectly describes Susana's isolation. In this work, she is in agony because she is squatting in the dark.
