Internet

In the matter of a few years, the Internet had grown from a far off concept to full blown reality and perhaps no one could have foreseen the developments that have occurred. Recently however, the popularity and effectiveness of the Internet has come under fire, and with good reason.
There has no doubt been much advancement in the World Wide Web, however this change is not all being accepted as positive. Consumer users have perhaps seen the most significant changes. With the total number of households connected to the Internet reaching nearly 111 million in 2003, the Internet has unquestionably increased. However, the profile of these users has shifted somewhat due to the changes in the Internet environment. .
In the last five years connection speed is becoming more and more of a concern to consumer users. Although the connection speed has increased significantly from the early days of home Internet, so has the cost. With the sheer amount of traffic on the Internet, is it any wonder that people are after the faster "vehicle" to get them to where they want to go? Equivalent to riding a motorcycle in a traffic jam, users with faster Internet access are able to better manoeuvre and avoid traffic jams. This speed does not come without a price tag though, and many users are now turning to faster connections such as Broadband and ISDN to get the results and thus avoid the "road rage" of being stuck in traffic. The issues with connection speed can partially be apportioned to the inclusion of graphics, audio and video files being used on Web pages. Previously, the content of the Web sites was purely informational, now however there is definite shift to more user-friendly interfaces. Whilst this has promoted a much more easy to use aspect, the technological implications have been harsh. Instead of a web page opening by downloading pages of information, it must now open graphics and other design tools.
